The three of us had a lovely time at The Barn this week. The weather was quite wet and overcast on the whole but the house was perfectly equipped to be a welcome refuge when we returned from our damp adventures! Car Port, Vestibule, clothes airer, HOT water, stove – brilliant!
We got some breaks in the cloud earlier in the week, which brought the Autumn colours to life during the day and gave us a stunning night sky view too. The terrace from the bedroom was the perfect vantage point to gaze at the stars and then nip inside when a warm up was needed. Agree with previous visitors, the Anchor Inn at Kippford was friendly and the food was good. We sampled Sunday roast ( from 12.00) and watched the dinghy racing from the coastal path back to Rockliffe.  We took the coastal path from Rockliffe to Sandyhills too. Some of the path is shared with the cattle.  Just coffee, ice lollies and flapjack at the Sandyhills holiday park shop, so glad we packed some lunch! Bus back from Sandyhills was welcome, £1.50 for 1 adult and dog friendly. Luna loved having the woodland route to Rockliffe on the doorstep, and Dalbeattie Town Wood proved very popular too especially Plantain loch….use the North car park to avoid the bike trials. Threave Gardens in Castle Douglas were impressive – would look great in Sunshine! Free parking and entry for NT members, and cafe is good!
The Barn is a wonderfully provisioned gem of a place!

Angie, Paul and Finn (Irish doodle puppy)

Had a lovely week! The cottage is very cosy and has everything you need ( and more!) Thank you for the wine (much appreciated) and Finn loved the doggy treats!
The location is perfect; very peaceful and surrounded by wildlife. e enjoyed watching the birds on the feeders around the garden, and even saw a red squirrel whilst sitting on the window seat!
Lots of lovely walks direct from The Barn. Explored many forests and beaches with the dog. Had a lovely Sunday dinner at The Anchor, Kippford, and then a long walk on the coastal path. Enjoyed Sandyhills and Southerness beaches. First time visiting this area and we thoroughly enjoyed it here.
Thank You! We will definitely recommend to friends

What a wonderful setting for a post-lockdown break! Lovely cottage – great attention to detail. Very comfortable regardless of a lot of rain. Dogs loved it. Stunning area and well worth a return visit. Outstanding hospitality, care, arrangements and high quality accommodation.

We had a wonderful stay in Rockcliffe, helped by some brilliant weather. Lots of good walks to be had, especially Rockcliffe to Sandhills and Rockcliffe to Kippford and back. Threave Garden is lovely and Castle Douglas is worth a visit. Check out the Sulwath Brewery and the Harris & Company Deli. We would recommend buying bird seed/peanuts for the many visiting birds and resident squirrels. Magic! Great location and very relaxing.

Had a relaxing week, spacious homely cottage. First 2-3 days good weather, never need the car, just walked and walked by the coast. All cafes very good in Kippford. We have stayed in the area for many years. This is one of the nieces properties so far. We will be back. Thank you!

Although the BBC weather app said this week was going to be a non-stop grey cloud, we’ve had weather like a greek island – enormous blue skies, swimming in the sea and loch ken, a lovely trip to the ethereal coast @ RSPB Mersehead, a sunset picnic on the rocks and a walk around Rough Island at low tide. We’ve seen oystercatchers, skyhawks and all sorts of other wonderful creatures out and about but our best decision by far was buying bags of birdseed and nuts from Londis in Colvend (it’s behind the counter) and filling up the feeders upstairs and the box on the tree opposite – daily visits from at least two red squirrels and a great spotted woodpecker. Very sad to leave.

Had an amazing stay. The Barn was a perfect place to stay. Peaceful and relaxing. Some of our favourite activities were: Mabie Forest (yellow trail and great views), Mersehead RSPB Reserve (amazing empty beach half-way round the walk!), walk from Rockcliffe to Sandhills and the walk to Kippford. The puppies had some epic runs on beaches. When the Rockcliffe tide was out they had the entire beach to run on. We’ll definitely be back. Thank you!
